O'Keeffe, Georgia

Pintora estadounidense. Estudió arte en Chicago y en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde conoció al fotógrafo Alfred Stieglitz, con quien contrajo matrimonio. A principios de la década de 1920, ya había surgido su estilo pictórico altamente individualista, tal como lo tipifican obras como Lirio negro (1926). Sus temas solían presentar vistas de gran tamaño de cráneos y otros huesos de animales, flores y órganos vegetales, conchas, rocas, montañas y otras formas naturales. Sus imágenes, misteriosamente sugerentes de huesos y flores, dispuestas contra espacios sin perspectiva, han inspirado una variedad de interpretaciones eróticas, psicológicas y simbólicas. Sus obras posteriores celebran los cielos claros y los paisajes desérticos de Nuevo México, donde se mudó luego de la muerte de su esposo, en 1946. Los críticos la consideran una de las artistas estadounidenses más originales e importantes, y sus obras son muy populares entre el público general.
